JISC Workshop on ePortfolios

How can ePortfolios support 21st Century Learning?

e-Portfolios are not a new concept.  In various guises, digital presentations of skills and competences, online records of achievement, and action plans with opportunities for reflection have been in use in education for nearly a decade.  So what is new about e-portfolios?

This free-to-attend workshop will explore what we mean by e-portfolio and how e-portfolio can support 21st century learning.  Drawing on the work of JISC funded projects and other significant e-portolio developments, it will provide a snapshot of learning enhanced by e-portoflios in higher, further and continuing education. 

Who should attend?
This workshop is for those who use, or support others use of e-portfolios, practitioners and managers in higher and further education, staff developers, those involved in initial teacher training, and in the management and implementation of PDP, CPD and lifelong learning.

ELESIG Symposium

ELESIG Effective Learning in the Digital Age Symposium

When: Wednesday, 6th October 2010 (Register by 29th September)
Where: Bonhill House, London

The 11th ELESIG Symposium, supported by JISC, will report the work of the JISC SLiDA Project that has been investigating how institutions are creating and enabling opportunities that promote the development of effective learning in a digital age.  The main deliverable's of the project were 10 institutional case studies and a final report with recommendations for further and higher education on how to develop effective institution-wide strategies and practices with better support effective learners in a digital age.  This is an opportunity to engage with members of the project team and to begin to consider your institution's policies and strategies and your own practices in relation to supporting learners in the digital age.  As always there will also be opportunities to network with members of the ELESIG community and to share and exchange latest project news and research findings including outcomes of some of this year's Small Awards Grants funded by the Higher Education Academy.

Innovating e-Learning 2010 Online Conference

Bringing Innovation to Life: from adversity comes opportunity

When: 23rd - 26th November 2010 (Online)

The theme of the 2010 Innovating e-Learning Conference reflects the challenges presented by the current climate of economic constraint and will explore how technology-enhanced learning can help universities and colleges to develop forward-looking educational futures and continue to complete globally.

The Programme:
There will be a variety of sessions under the themes of Releasing the Potential and Realising the Value.

The Experience
Each them will run over 2 days and you will be able to see presenters via webcams and try out new technologies in the 'Have-a-go' area - which showcases JISC projects and services.  The informative and entertaining conference blog will once again be provided by James Clay, from Gloucestershire College.  Representatives of the JISC Regional Support Centres will offer guided tours of virtual worlds and the virtual coffee shop will be open all hours, providing a sense of support and community.

Experts Group Meeting

Learning and Teaching Practice Experts Group Meeting

When: 20th October

Where: Maple House, Birmingham

Theme: Looking to the Future

The meeting will begin with an update from  Gill Ferrell and Marianne Sheppard on some of the emerging findings from the Curriculum Design and Delivery Programmes.  This is followed by two participatory sessions from the projects themselves. After lunch three innovative projects funded under the Learning and Teaching Innovation Grants will outline their projects which involve the use of Nintendo DSi hand-held games consoles, virtual worlds technology and twitter for learning. There is also the 'Expert Group' and 'Members Showcase' which highlights some of the members projects work.

JISC will cover the travel and subsistence expenses of members attending meetings, up to the value of £150 on receipt of a completed  Download Exclaim and original receipts 

Elluminate Wednesdays

The return of the Wednesday Elluminate Live! sessions begin in October - details as follows:

October 6th (2-3pm): Transforming the Curriculum to enhance learner, progress and employability

This session will showcase the changes each project in the Curriculum Delivery Cluster B (Lewisham College, Kingston College, West Anglia College and Kingston University/De Montfort University) have made to their delivery methods, highlighting how these changes have delivered improvements to learner progress and employability. 

November 3rd (2-3pm): T-SPARC Project

November 17th (2-3pm): Dynamic Learning Maps Project

This project will demonstrate how it has developed web-based maps to represent the medical curriculum at Newcastle University, provide a new way for students and staff to engage with the curriculum.

ALT-C 2010 Conference

"Into Something Rich and Strange" - making sense of the sea-change

The 17th International Conference of the Association for Learning Technology 

When: 7th September (8.30am) to 9th September 2010 (13.45pm)
Where: Nottingham University

Learning technology is part of the fabric of formal and informal learning. A sea-change is taking place involving a structural and pervasive shift in the nature of the Internet. Specifically: we and our learners are always connected; the devices we use are growing in capability and diversity; the information environment and the tools and services that we use to navigate and to interact with it and with each other are in great flux.

The challenge posed for education is great. It is to increase effectiveness, productivity, and quality, whilst institutional and agency budgets are reducing, rather than just to promise improvements. At the same time we need to ensure the spread of innovations that are scalable and of long-term value, both educationally and financially, whilst keeping learners and learning at the heart of our thinking.
